More on our Speaker: Michael Merker, MBA-Information Technology, CGCIO, MCSE, MCSA, MCP, A+, Network +, Security+, Citrix CCA Michael Merker is the Chief Information Officer for the Martin County Board of County Commissioners (MCBOCC). In that role, Michael oversees Internet services, network infrastructure, data security, email, desktop computers, data center operations, software and website development, and telecommunications and radio services operations, with a staff of 40. They are the “computer guys” for the MCBOCC. In his previous position as IT Director for Palm Beach State College, Michael managed the group responsible for the network and data center for the entire College. Michael is a former Principal of Computer Network Specialists, and a former partner of KW Computer Services, Inc. He has designed, installed, and managed many different types of computer systems for clients over his thirteen-year tenure at those two firms. In previous positions with Xerox Corp., Schlumberger Industries, Moore Business Forms, and Computer Associates International, he has provided training, consultation and direct service to both colleagues and clients. Printed software training guides and classroom courses, purchase order software, network system diagramming, sales training and accounting system design have been numbered among his work. As a construction controller for The Florida Home Group, EDP auditor for Coopers and Lybrand (now Pricewaterhouse Coopers), and an accounting systems manager for Schlumberger, Michael refined his financial and business skills. He instituted streamlined, automated billing systems at both firms, which resulted in a decrease in billing and collection cycles with no addition of staff. Michael holds a B.Mus. in Music Merchandising from the University of Miami (Florida) and has completed undergraduate work in Physics and Physical Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Michael has also earned his MBA in Information Technology at Florida Atlantic University. He is active with leadership positions in several religious organizations and has served on the PTO and School Advisory Council at Westward Elementary School, having served in various board position in both organizations, most recently PTO President and SAC Chairman. He has given up on a musical career, for which his friends and family are eternally grateful.
